House Update No. 7 // Kitchen Renovation Progress

Our kitchen renovation is really starting to pick up the pace, and I thought it was time I updated you! If you’re new, check out this post from when we bought our house last summer, and this post about what my ultimate vision(s) is/are for the kitchen.

You might remember from my previous blog posts and Instagram stories that we planned to take out a wall between the existing kitchen and the “fireplace room,” as we call it. It HAPPENED, y’all!  I can’t even explain how much it opened up the space. It was a load-bearing wall, so they did have to put a support beam up in the ceiling first. Now, we’ll have room for an island + a little pantry! Yay!

Over the past few weeks/months, the wall came down, the old vinyl floors came up, and all of the old drywall and trim was taken out of the kitchen. (Thanks, Rudd! ?) The next phases of the renovation were putting up new drywall on the ceiling and walls, adding can lights, and laying down new hardwood floors to match the fireplace room. I was VERY skeptical of the hardwood floor matching process because the existing floors are original to the 1960s house, but I am so impressed! I truly can’t even tell where the old floor ends and the new floor starts!

What the space looked like “before!” You can see a little bit of the vinyl flooring in the existing kitchen through that doorway – this is the wall that came down!

While the wall was coming down – I underestimated the amount of dust/debris. It was such a process!

And after the support beam went up in the ceiling – this was the very first moment we saw the space completely open! (Wires everywhere – ahhh!!)

I called this the “haunted mansion” stage in my mind – haha! This was once the wall, the drywall, insulation, and floors were all torn out!

Insulation back in + can lights!

Much lighter and brighter – this was once the new drywall was up!

As the new floors were going in – I loved seeing the contrast before they stained them!

Annnd what it looks like right now with the new hardwoods! The floors are a little dusty/dirty, but I’m so happy with how everything is coming together.

Next up on the renovation schedule: We’re expecting the cabinets to be installed within the next week or so, and then it will be time for countertops, the backsplash, and paint! Rudd is also adding new baseboards, crown molding, and window trim like we did for the rest of the house, so we’ll be painting that as well.

I can’t wait to show y’all some MAJOR before and afters once everything is finished!
