Brazilian Blowout Treatment at The Hair Bar

I already know some of y’all are thinking “a Brazilian what??” and that’s honestly what this post is all about. If you’ve heard of the Brazilian Blowout hair treatment and have some questions about it, or if you’ve never heard of it and are curious, we’re going to cover all of that today. Before we get started with the good stuff, you can check out my previous post on “How I Tame My Curly Hair” if you’re curious about specific styling products I use.

Last Friday, I went to see my amazing hairdresser Amber Flowers at The Hair Bar in Columbia. If you’re a soda-city native and are looking for someone to trust with your locks, this is the only person/place I would recommend! Amber has been doing hair for 17 years and seriously knows her stuff. She’s been cutting, highlighting, and Brazilian-ing my hair for over 5 years now. Without her, I wouldn’t be able grow it long and keep it healthy! She recently moved into her new salon at The Hair Bar inside of Sola Salon with fellow stylist, Amy. Their adorable space is pictured below (complete with complimentary Diet Coke and wine ?) Click here to visit their brand NEW Instagram page @thehairbarsc.

On Friday, Amber refreshed my highlights (the only “coloring” I do to my hair), trimmed my ends, and did my Brazilian Blowout treatment. If you want to see videos of what the process is like, head to my Instagram stories! These photos of my hair are post-Brazilian Blowout and show what my hair looks like after a quick blow dry.

So what exactly is a Brazilian Blowout? The Brazilian Blowout is a professional smoothing treatment that takes your frizzy, curly, dry hair and turns it into locks that are smooth, shiny, and manageable. If you’ve read my previous hair post or heard me talk about it on Instagram, you know that I have naturally dry and curly hair! It’s so difficult to manage in the hot and humid summers and blow drying takes forever…

I first learned about the Brazilian Blowout treatment when Amber introduced me to it a few years ago. Now I’ll never go back! With the treatment, my blow drying time is cut in half and I don’t even have to flat iron my hair afterwards because it turns out smooth and shiny. If this sounds too good to be true, I was right there with you before I got my first treatment! One of the things I love the most about it is that unlike Keratin smoothing treatments, Brazilian Blowouts do not eliminate all of the body in your hair. I’ve always loved having a lot of volume in my hair. This treatment allows me to achieve that while keeping my hair smooth!

Here’s the exact process that your salon professional will go through for your Brazilian Blowout treatment (all of this is explained on my Instagram stories!)

  1. Apply Brazilian Blowout solution to wet hair
  2. Blow dry to lock in the solution
  3. Flat iron hair to seal in the treatment
  4. Wet hair and apply hair mask
  5. Rinse, and blow dry

A lot of people with curly hair have also asked me if the Brazilian Blowout is a straightening treatment. To that, I would say, no. Keratin treatments are straightening treatments, but Brazilian Blowouts are smoothing treatments. If I let my hair air-dry when I get out of the shower, my hair will still be curly/wavy when it drys. It’s just a smoother, more relaxed version!

You might be wondering if you have to wait to wash your hair after the Blowout or wait to pull it up in a pony tail. The answer is no! The Brazilian treatment allows you to wash your hair immediately because it’s completely finished in the salon.

How long does it last, you ask? When I first started getting the treatment regularly, I got it about every 3 months because it wears off every 12 weeks. Amber has always said that the treatment builds upon itself. This means that the more times you get it, the longer it will last! Now I get a Brazilian blowout every 4 months, or 3 times a year total. Sometimes I will get it more often in the hot/humid months and go longer in between treatments during the cool/dry months.

In case you have further questions, I’ve pasted the official description from the Brazilian Blowout website below:
