Answering Your Hair Questions

I’ve been itching to write today’s post for a couple of week’s after some of y’all reached out with hair questions! My hair journey has been a long one, but I always love to share about what works/doesn’t work for me. In this post, we’re going to cover the treatments, products, and tools that I personally use on my hair!

PS – Thanks for all of the awesome questions y’all submitted on my Instagram stories! I tried to consolidate them and choose the ones the were asked the most frequently – hope this help!

1. Are there any treatments you recommend?

If you’ve been around long enough, you’ve probably heard me talk about getting Brazilian Blowouts. I have very coarse, dry, and naturally curly hair and this treatment has worked wonders for the health and length of my hair! I’ve been getting them 1-2 times a year for the past 5 years and swear by them.

2. How often do you color your hair?

Because I have naturally blonde hair, I just get my hair highlighted every 3 months. I go to Amber at The Hair Bar in Sola Salon in Columbia! (Be sure to tell her I sent you!) We alternate between a full head of highlights and a half head depending on the time of year and how my color is looking. She does my blowouts as well. I also get my hair trimmed slightly every 3 months!

3. Hair breakage is a big deal for me and I feel like it mostly happens at night? Do you braid your hair while you sleep?

Great question! For the past few years, I’ve been using these silk pillowcases from Amazon which helps keep your hair from breaking (and your skin from wrinkling!) while you sleep at night. I only braid my hair occasionally – I mostly put my hair in a very loose top knot with one of these scrunchies while I sleep! If I do braid, I use a scrunchie to secure it as well to avoid breakage. Never sleep with a rubber band hair tie!!

4. What shampoo do you use? I’m looking for something on the natural side.

I use the L’Oreal sulfate free “moisturizing” line of shampoo and conditioner! Sulfate free is essential to keep Brazilian Blowouts in tip-top shape and also helps retains hair highlights/color. For a more “natural” option, I would recommend the Beauty Counter Daily Shampoo and Daily Conditioner – they’re both best sellers!!

After I shampoo and condition, I like to use this Soul Food Hair Mask by Amika! It’s the one hair mask I’ve used where I can actually SEE and FEEL a difference after using it – it makes my hair so smooth and shiny! Sometimes I just reserve it for special occasions because it’s a little pricey.

5. I’ve always used Chi hot tools. Do you have any recommendations for another brand?

I used to use Chi a long time ago as well, but in recent times I’ve used a good ol’ Conair Infiniti Pro straightener and 0.75 inch curling iron! I mostly use the curling iron like a curling “wand” and wrap my hair around it instead of using the clamp. I’ll try to do a quick how-to on my Instagram stories soon – probably this Sunday!

Wayne Powers recently sent my his new Glidewinder Flatiron (on sale right now!) and his new Rewindr wand (not available to the public yet) so I’ll probably be replacing my old Conair straightener with this flatiron! I’ll always hold onto my “regular” Conair curling iron because I think it’s essential in addition to a wand.

6. What products do you put in your hair while it’s wet?

I like to keep things really simple with hair products these days after being a certified #hairproducthoarder in high school. While my hair is wet, I use a heat protecting spray like this one from Tressemé! The only other product I use in my wet hair is a quarter-sized amount of this Argan Oil of Morocco to help my dry locks! Oils are pretty much the most moisturizing thing you can put in your hair. I comb those products through my hair with a wide tooth plastic comb – don’t ever brush through wet hair because it will cause breakage!

7. What products do you put in your hair for styling?

I lightly spray each section of my hair with this Tressemé Ultra Fine Mist Hairspray before I use my curling iron, and then spray my whole head again when I finish styling! I like using a fine mist hairspray so that it’s not too heavy and allows for re-styling. I also use the original Batiste dry shampoo on days that I don’t wash my hair, or for a little boost on my roots when my hair is clean!

8. Best vitamins for hair growth when you have to use a lot of heat for curly, thick hair?

I can totally relate! In order to grow my hair, I first stopped trying to use QUITE as much heat on my hair. Easier said than done for sure! I’ve been using either these hair, skin and nails gummies or these Biotin supplements over the last few years to grow out my hair! As long as you’re getting extra Biotin, you really can’t go wrong.
